Visiting a tofu factory in Indonesia

This is how tofu is produced in Indonesia. From importing the doy beans to forming a tofu block. We learned about the production process in a factory in Magelang Indonesia.

Do you like tofu?

You might ask yourself what is tofu made from? We have been curious too and decided to visit a local tofu factory. We initially traveled to the area of Magelang to visit the Borobodur temple but afterwards we decided to learn more about the local economy. This is how they produce the tofu in Indonesia. They showed us the whole process, from importing the soy beans to pressing the blocks and selling it to the market. Some machines are interestingly improvised and some processes are well thought out. It was a very interesting visit, to see how the soy beans goes through the different process until it becomes a well shaped tofu block.

soy beans

Soy beans imported from the US. They explained us that there is not enough production capacity to get enough soy beans from the local farmers.

tofu oven

the oven is about to be heated. The pan on top of the oven is to simultaneously heat up the water and cool down the escaping heat, to protect the roof from burning.

tofu sieve

The sieve is prepared. The wooden part of the sieve is hand made and serves its purpose perfectly.

soy bean squeezer

The soy beans have been in water for more than 4 hours. The soaked up soy beans are thrown in to this squeezer to get the liquid soy “milk” out of the beans.

The liquid milk is sieved.

Slurping some soy milk in the Indonesian tofu factory. The infrastructure is basic and some things are improvised. I was a great experience to visit this family business tofu factory.

The Gili water swing

gili swing

Somebody had this brilliant idea to place a swing right in the water close to the beach. I dont know which swing was the first but you’ll find a couple of them on Gili Trawangan. Most people just stand there and shoot a picture for the gram. Depending on the tide you can really swing. I had so much fun on this thing, trying to get higher while the water splashes up. Have you ever been on a water swing like this one?

I’ll be honest, i already saw a couple of water swing pictures swinging through instagram before i saw this Gili water swing on the Gili Trawangan Island. Nevertheless it is something fascinating, a swing placed in the middle of the ocean. This one was placed right in front of the hotel we were staying. Someone had the idea of building such a water swing and now there are a handful of swings on the island or in the sea, however you want to call it. During the daytime the swing is often occupied by people shooting pictures and making selfies. The first time i had the chance to get on it, i tried to swing. first attempt failed. One of the two swings was hanging a bit lower than the other one. with the lower one i had no chance to swing because it was too hard to get enough velocity to swing out of the water. It depends on the tide, when it’s high, it gets more difficult, when low, easier. The second try on the other swing was successful. i gained height once the swing came out of the water. Trust me, that was fun!

in this video blog we explored the famous Tegalalang rice terrace. back in the days it was simply used to farm rice. Nowadays it is mainly a tourist spot. but why? because the layers of the rice fields are very aesthetic! The terrace are close to Ubud in Bali, Indonesia.
