Climbing the Borobodur!

borobodur

It was one of the most impressive moments climbing up the stairs of the Borobodur temple. While getting closer to the top of the biggest Buddhist temple, we saw the pillars covered in fog. Everything felt so mystical.

The worlds biggest Buddhist temple close to Yogyakarta was the reason why we traveled to this place. The day before we discovered the hotel area, relaxed and went early to bed. To get enough sleep. because on this day we woke up at 04:00 AM to experience the sunrise from the infamous Borobodur temple. Unfortunately it was too foggy to see the sunrise but the temple was impressive and the fog made this place super mystical. So is it worth to visit the Borobodur temple? watch and decide for yourself. The Borobodur temple is a huge monument and is on the UNESCO world heritage list.

Indonesia has so much to offer. Explore beautiful layers of rice fields. Visit detail-rich temples or mosques and learn about the Indonesian culture. Drive along stunning landscapes. Hike up a volcano and enjoy the sunrise at the edge of a crater. Grab a board and ride one of those perfectly shaped waves. Eat through Indonesia diverse kitchens. Countless things to do and to see. this is Indonesia.

A casual airport sunrise

sunrise lombok airport

Packed the bags and woke up early. It rained heavily this night and we had to calculate some extra time to get to the airport because there was a risk for flooded roads. Fortunately we arrived on time. Boarding the plane we have been rewarded with this stunning sunrise reflecting in the water on the runway.

Tanjung Aan Beach on Lombok

The Tanjung Aan Beach is the most beautiful beach on Lombok they say. It was our mission to check this spot out. Relaxing by the beach with coconut water and beach chair occupation. Afterwards we climbed up the Merese Hills right besides Tanjung Aan and operated the drone to get the birds eye view on this perfect spot!

A warm sunny day in Borobodur, close to Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Drone batteries have been fully charged and the pool was empty. Easy decision to go for a dip and a chilled drone session. Filmed the hotel area for the vlog and captured some pictures while Simone was floating like cloud in the sky.

Surfing Bingin Beach

surfing bingin beach

Have you ever heard of surfing Bingin Beach? probably not! it is not one of those super known spots, nevertheless its also not a top secret spot. What i can say is that the beach has been spared by mass tourism and that's cool. There is no huge mega hotel with hundreds of rooms. I'll be honest here, the beach perhaps not the most beautiful one to sunbath and the rocky environment makes it tricky to go for a relaxed swim without hurting your feet. So let's talk about surfing Bingin Beach!

The Surfing Bingin Beach video on Youtube. Don't forget to subscribe to my Youtube Channel

How to get to Bingin Beach?

I already made a detailed Blogpost about the Bingin Beach itself so i'll quote this section here and you can read more information about where to stay and how to get there on this post.

"Bingin Beach is situated in the southern part of Bali, the region of Uluwatu. Bali has its own airport in Denpansar which is 35 min car drive away from Bingin Beach. Book a hotel close to the beach or park your scooter at the beach parking. Just google for “bingin beach parking”. From the parking should be street signs leading to the beach. The way leads through unconventional narrow streets through the buildings in front of the beach. sometimes the way seems to be wrong but trust the signs your on the right track."

The drop: the surfer is on top of a clean faced wave building up on the Bingin Beach reef.

Beach or Reef break?

Surfing Bingin Beach means dealing with sharp rocks. It is a reef break and i can highly recommend you to wear water shoes. I cut my feet, not very dramatic but you can hurt yourself seriously if you're not carefully, especially on low tide. I even saw some people surfing with helmets. Always stay safe buddy.

After a successful drop the surfer maneuvers himself slightly into that beautiful tube.

Is there a Surf school?

Yes, there are one or two surf schools. I've never participated in a lesson nor have i analysed their teaching style, but what i can remember is that some locals paddle out with you and teach you how they surf. So don't expect a "WSL" internationally certificated pro surf school.

Ending the ride with splashing up a some sea water. great job!

Can i rent a board in Bingin Beach?

Of course you can! The surf schools offer boards for beginners but you will also get some smaller specimens if you are a more advanced surfer. I think there is even a shaper, because they offer board repairs right by the beach. I mean in case you f* up your board shredding too hard. haha.

About Bali

Bali is one of the Islands in the southern part of Indonesia. Mostly there is tropical warm weather on the Island. The Island has an airport in the capital city of Denpasar which is situated in the South of Bali. The most beautiful month on Bali is September and the Rainy Season lasts from the end of november until the end of march. Most people speak balinese or indonesian on the island. We travelled Bali for a month. We landed in Denpasar in the south of Bali and went up to the north. We stayed in places like Nusa Dua, Canggu, Ubud and Pemuteran.

Bali travel

One day at Cali Colombia, City of Salsa

A day in Cali!

I rented an apartment near the city centre. That day I woke up around 8 o’clock. I made my breakfast like always, eggs, ham, toasts and a coffee.

I payed 160 dollars for 7 night and my friends almost 400 dollars. So check out https://de.airbnb.com/ if you’re interested in renting an apartment. It is normally even cheaper than a hotel in South America!

At 10 am I met my friends that stayed at the sheraton hotel close by, which was to expensive for my taste. But of course I used there Rooftop Pool!

Hotel Four Points by Sheraton Cali, nice rooms, breakfast and near to all the good streets, with bars, restaurants etc.

Here the view from the Rooftop Pool!

At 10.15 we started our City tour with a little bus up the hill to the Cristo Rey Statue. It kind of reminds me of the one in Rio de Janeiro.

The view over the city, must be nice at night!

So from there we drove to the city centere to see the Catpark. In 2006 there was held a contest between different artists that had to create a design for one of those cats. It is a relaxing place next to the river.

Here some pictures of those cats

Salsa Caleña, Capital of Salsa

Cali is the world capital of salsa because here the dancers of the 60s and 70s (Salsa dancers) risked to speed up the salsa music a little, because they felt it was slow. So since that time Cali is famous for its salsa Caleña.

Within the City you will find this monument for salsa. Las trompetas de niche. If you walk under it, you are able to listen to the different stages of the creation of a salsa song.

MUST DO! SALSA

So if you are in Cali, you have to dance Salsa! There are a couple places to take Salsa classes.

The Viajero Hostel offers free Salsa lessons and a nice pool, included in the Price! Of course there are Salsa clubs all over the City to enjoy a night out in this vibrant city. http://www.elviajerohostels.com/categorias/hostels/contenido/el-viajero-cali

After a long day we visited two churches near the centere. The Iglesia la Ermita was in my opinion a really beautiful one.

Iglesia la Ermita

Of course we needed to eat some traditional food so we got some Empanadas and ended the day with a nice meal in a trendy restaurant.

Empanadas what?

But what are Empanadas? An empanada is a fried or baked pastry in Latin America.  Empanada comes from the Spanish word empanar that literally means enbreaded.  Normally they are stuffed with meat or cheese, corn and other ingredients. Just amazing and a must try if you visit South America!

Wedding Day!

Also that week was the weeding of a good friend of mine. He married a wonderful girl from Cali. I had to dance Salsa with all of her friends and family. In this picture you can see, where the ceremony took place.

I will keep you posted with more stories of my travels and pictures I took along the way.

With best regards David

Life on Gili Trawangan

ship wreck gili islands

A full week on Gili Trawangan in Indonesia means really a full week of relaxing and slowing down. Already the fact, that on the island no engines are aloud and only bicycles, horses and your own feet bring you from A to B, proves that you will really slow down. But that's not the only thing. Gili Trawangan is the most populated of the three Gili Islands, that means you will find lots of nice restaurants and bars there. Gili Trawangan has a lot of nightlife to offer as well. Boats bring you to the more deserted neighbor islands Gili Meno and Gili Air. Lots of beautiful reefs for snorkeling and diving around.

How to get to Gili Trawangan?

We purchased our Gili Boat ticket online. Actually there are a lot of different options to get over to the islands. In peak season i can recommend you to buy a couple of days in advance, otherwise you could miss your preferred departing day and time. But whilst low season you can actually book a day before departing or even on the same day you want to leave. If you decide to buy from a street seller always negotiate the price and compare different offers. You can choose between private boats, which are the most expansive, fast boats and public ferries. We chose the public ferry because it is the cheapest option and we actually enjoy a good boat trip. more about it here

No engines on the Island but the boats are of course running on benzin

Where to stay?

Of course in the Pinkcoco Hotel, it is not right in the center of Gili Trawangan but they have a restaurant, a popular bar and bicycles for rent. The beach is sandy and in the water a bit rocky but depending on the tide there are some good areas to go on a swim. And of course there is a hotel pool if you prefer to avoid the salt.

Check it out here

gili restaurants

Amazing restaurants on the island. Places to have a meal, stare at the ocean and live life to the fullest.

Which are the best Restaurants on the Island?

Well, its difficult to choose which one are the best restaurants but there are some we really can recommend. Healthy, delicious and chilled locations. The prices on the island are a bit more expansive than in Indonesia because it is also more touristy but still affordable. So here we go:

Besides those Restaurants i can highly recommend you to eat seafood in the local market or in a seafood restaurant (lots of them around)

nightlife gili trawangan

The nightlife is vibrant on the island. live music and raving party all night long.

Do not miss the tropical fruit juices!
