These three jungle huts fit perfectly in their environment. Wondering if Mowgli lives in one of them.

Welcome to Medan

medan sumatra

After some days in the jungle of Sumatra, we decided to gift us some luxury and booked the JW Marriott in Medan. This is probably the most luxurious hotel in Medan. Living on a minimal living standard on an adventure and then checking into such a place really lets you appreciate a comfortable bed, delicious meal at the restaurant and a rooftop pool with a decent view. Whatever you experience, you experience it much more intense after the opposite lifestyle of mud, minimalism and mosquito bites.

The Stay

Check out the Hotel were we stayed

Medan is a huge city on Sumatra in Indonesia. I have travelled for the first time to Medan. We haven’t spent lots of day there but had some time to experience the city, stroll through the shopping malls and feel the city life.

Previously before we headed to Medan we have spent some days in the Jungle of Sumatra, meeting Orangutans and other inhabitants of the Sumatran Jungle.

Visiting the Orangutan in Sumatra

orang utan sumatra

From the hectic city life to the deep jungle of Bukit Lawang in Sumatra visiting the Orangutan. Bukit Lawang is well known for Jungle Treks but there isn’t a super modern infrastructure and plenty of luxury hotels. Nevertheless it is worth a visit to experience the nature and get on an exciting adventure!

Some impressions on Instagram

The orange giant, the Orangutan, is only found on two islands world wide, on Sumatra and Borneo. Because of agriculture in general and specific palm oil monocultures their space to live shrinks from year to year. Not only the Orangutan is suffering from shrinking forests he can lives in also lots of other animals are missing the rain forest to live in. The deforestation happens because of the space which is used to plant palm oil palm trees in huge monocultures.

In this documentation we decided to travel to Bukit Lawang in Sumatra, hire a guide and explore the Jungle which is left. A couple of days far away from civilization and human impact. It was an amazing adventure and we have been surprised by the diversity and beauty of the flora and fauna in this Tropical Tainforest.

Disclaimer: Palm oil is not bad in general. It is a very efficient type of oil, probably the most efficient when it come to input and output ratio. We consume lots of oil in several products and that is a fact and hard to change because there is no substitute ingredient nowadays. Palm oil is not the only reason for deforestation. The meat industry, because of cattle farming, causes most of the deforestation worldwide. (this is no scientific report, this is my own perspective on this case.)

This Perfspot is called Sumur Gumuling. It is known for this patio where the four staircases meet in the platform in the middle.

The Taman Sari Water Castle in Yogyakarta is one of the most famous sights in the city. It is known for the “instagrammable” spots, which means spots you can take great pictures for Instagram. This fact that visitors love to take pictures there simply means that it is a very aesthetic place. And it definitely is! The architecture of the castle, the tunnel and the surrounding buildings is simply fantastic.

The Bling Bling Cars

alun alun bling bling cars

This is a different “nightlife” experience. People of all ages come together at the Alun Alun Square in Yoygyakarta to enjoy this attraction. Cars covered with lights and illumination gadgets. Bluetooth speakers pumping beats. This is a party! pay a couple of bucks and jump into such a car to drive around and enjoy the show.

We stumble upon these Bling Bling Cars and where surprised how much fun it is to drive in such a car! After an eventful day we decided to explore the city by night. First off we had a stop at the Tempo Gelato to have an ice cream. With a Bejak, this is how they call the bicycle taxis, we drove to the Alun-Alun square in Yogyakarta. This is where we found those amazing Bling Bling Cars! Do not matters if you ride with such a car, or go-cart, it is a great experience to just watch them roll around the square and people enjoying the ride

Hats and Smiles

strawhat

Sun, smiles, temples and straw hats.
The Prambanan temples are some huge buildings built by hundreds of years old stone. It was an amazing day to explore the sight with all its different angles, corners and perspectives.
Part of the Perfspots exploration team was Simone. We have been equipped with plenty of water, some snacks, the cameras and of course the traditional Lombok straw hats. It was an amazing day and the best part was to explore the less crowded, less popular temples in the area.

Explore the Temples!

An early morning wake up to explore the Prambanan Temple and all the temples surrounding it. We have ordered a taxi directly to the hotel which brought us to the Prambanan Temple area. Arriving there, obviously we where not the only ones. But it was not crowded because the Prambanan Temple is pretty large and the tourists visiting it spread out over the sight. I documented our experience on this Travel Vlog. It was an insanely hot day but we decided to walk to the other temples behind the Prambanan. We noticed, most tourists only visit the main attraction and do not visit the other attractions. We highly recommend you to check the others out as well. Exploring the Candi Sewu, Candi Bubrah and the Candi Lumbung was amazing. Walking through the abandoned sights really felt like walking in a indiana jones movie! Especially the Candi Lumbung was fascinating with its unique architecture and chambers.

Coffee over Yogyakarta’s roofs

Twelfth floor. A nice red wing chair. A huge window. Beautiful view over Yogyakarta. Small but well designed lounge table. But most important, complementary coffee!

Check out the Hotel

yogya

Every day, the first thing when i got up was booting the coffee machine.

A good hot steaming cup of coffee in front of this view: an absolute perfect spot!

Also before heading to the pool of course!

hotel coffee

There is no better combination than enjoying calmly a cup of coffee while overlooking a busy city. How people hurry to go to work and mind their business. Cars and Scooters driving up and down. Street vendors and businessman crossing their ways. All while time seems to stand still for you holding the cup.

The Hotel Vlog

Arriving in Yogyakarta we have been overwhelmed by the traffic. Scooters, cars, coaches. Then we arrived. The lobby boy opened the doors and carried our luggage inside. First impression: a really fancy Lobby! comfy lounge chairs. diamonds hanging from the ceiling and a delicious welcome drink. That was a nice arrival. But wait for the hotel room the view of Yogya or Jogja, however you want to call it, was stunning!
